What Is EVCI Certification?

EV Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) certification covers the design, installation, project management, and commissioning of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) in commercial settings. Multiple organizations offer relevant credentials in this rapidly expanding field.

EVITP
Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program
The leading EVSE installer credential. Recognized by NEVI Formula Program for installation contractors. Requires electrical licensure.
NABCEP EV
NABCEP EV Charging Installer
Broader installation and commissioning credential from North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. More rigorous exam + experience documentation path.

The EVCI credential landscape is evolving rapidly as commercial building codes and federal incentives drive widespread EVSE deployment. Both credentials are credible; EVITP currently has broader federal program recognition through NEVI. State-specific credentials also exist in some jurisdictions.

EVCI professionals work across Level 2 EVSE (240V, 7–19 kW) and DC Fast Charging (DCFC) installations (50–350+ kW), requiring knowledge of electrical systems, load management, utility interconnection, and NEC compliance.

Why It Matters for Commercial Energy

One of the Fastest-Growing Commercial Energy Credentials

The IRA allocated $7.5 billion for EV charging infrastructure. NEVI requires certified installers for all federally-funded projects. This is creating a significant and durable demand for EVCI-certified professionals in commercial settings.

Commercial property owners are rapidly deploying EVSE for multiple overlapping reasons:

Energy consultants, engineers, and retrofit specialists who understand EVCI financing, incentives, and installation requirements can unlock entire project categories that non-EVCI professionals cannot serve.
